Distance no barrier for couple seeking top-quality retirement advice
More and more, distance is becoming less of a barrier to seeking quality professional help, especially in the wake of recent licencing legislation, where the pool of qualified SMSF advisers has decreased within the Australian accounting profession.
When educator Rowena and her retired husband Damian needed to review their future retirement options, they sought assistance from a familiar source.
“Wayne Turner was my mother’s accountant,” says Rowena. “When we dealt with her effects after she had died, it became logical to move our own affairs and have Wayne do our work.”
“We had had an on-and-off relationship with Carrick Aland over some 30 years via our family and came to Wayne about 12 months ago bringing our personal and farm accounting plus our self-managed super.”
“Wayne had such a familiarity with mum, but he also had his head around what Damian and I wanted to achieve having originally set up our SMSF years ago, so there was a natural flow.”
“There were no speed bumps when we moved to Intuitive Super and Carrick Aland,” says Rowena. “For us it was the level of Wayne’s professional finger-on-the-pulse and strategy in his thinking that he delivered, together with Daniel Ellis and Beth Hall.”
“They put a lot of work into the final breakdown and explained the strategy. The clever part is that now our SMSF is only one part of our financial puzzle.”
Intuitive Super and Carrick Aland also advised on updating the couple’s Wills in conjunction with their lawyer. Then Daniel helped set up a legacy to leave to their grandchildren bearing in mind the tax consequences of doing that effectively.
“The standout for us was Wayne maximising our SMSF – looking at current assets, what was coming up with the estate and our complex shareholdings over many years – to devise a strategy with a long-term view,” says Rowena.
“My dad used to say he ‘trained’ Wayne Turner back in the days of Carrick Ashmead but, thanks to our original family association in Tara and, now, wealth planning with Intuitive Super and Carrick Aland Wealth Planning, I trust and am confident we’ve made the best decision.”
Intuitive Super Director Wayne Turner added, “Working with Rowena and Damian illustrates how, over a number of years, a multi-disciplinary network of financial specialists, including the likes of Intuitive Super, can assist multi-generational families.”
Wayne Turner was shortlisted as SMSF Specialist Accountant of the Year Finalist in the QLD 2017 SMSF & Accounting Awards, recognising individuals and businesses that are making their mark in SMSF and accounting advice by championing professionalism, quality advice and innovation.
