Important things to consider when choosing a name for your SMSF
Ensure your SMSF’s name is unique and matches registration details to avoid delays
When setting up an SMSF, you need to complete a number of steps. One of these is to name your SMSF — this usually occurs when you set up the fund and sign the trust deed.
When selecting a name for your SMSF, don’t use names that are identical or similar to another fund’s name. For example, if you’re rolling your super benefits over from a retail or industry fund you should avoid using that fund’s name for your SMSF.
The name of the SMSF you put on the fund’s registration form must also match the name you used when you created the fund’s trust deed. This will prevent delays with your SMSF registration.
You can check Super Fund Lookup to see if your SMSF’s name has been used previously or is similar to another fund’s name.
You can also find additional information on setting up your SMSF at Register your fund and get an ABN or by downloading the ATO guide Starting a self-managed super fund.
